under a bare tree
a few mauve crocuses
quiver in the wind
Michael Gunton
One fine morning
And it could have been ours –
the heart skipping out of bed
one fine morning. The heart
with the day singing in its ears,
the heart reaching for its coat,
closing the door.
And it could have been ours -
the heart finding itself caught
with its toes on the starting line,
tricked into running, over fields,
over fences, over stiles.
And it could have been ours -
the heart tripping over itself,
with its face to the land,
deafened by its own hooves of thunder.
And it could have been ours –
the heart,
both less and more than a grain of sand.
And it could have been ours –
without doing anything really wrong,
the heart struck dumb, like a dog’s,
- one fine morning. Maggie Sawkins July 2005
